We want you to see the working, because a number without a method is not much use when you are budgeting.
Each route in the calculator carries a third-party industry benchmark: a typical total cost, a typical volume in cubic metres, and a resulting rate per cubic metre. That benchmark volume represents a standard three-bedroom household, which is the most common interstate move.
When you choose a different home size, we scale that benchmark volume up or down using the multipliers below, then apply the same rate per cubic metre to produce a scaled cost range. Selecting a three-bedroom house returns the benchmark figures unchanged.

What affects interstate moving cost?
Distance and route
Longer routes cost more, but not proportionally. Well-travelled corridors such as Melbourne to Sydney are cheaper per cubic metre than remote routes, because trucks run them constantly and rarely travel empty.
Volume of belongings
Interstate moving is priced on the space your goods occupy in the truck. Volume matters far more than weight for most households.
Property access
How close the truck can get to your door changes how long loading takes. A long carry from the street adds labour at both ends.
Stairs and lifts
Walk-ups add time. Buildings with lifts are usually easier, provided the lift can be booked and the loading dock reserved for your window.
Truck parking distance
In dense suburbs a permit may be needed to park a large truck near the property. Sorting that out in advance keeps the clock down.
Packing requirements
Whether you pack yourself or have it done, and how much fragile or awkward material is involved, changes both time and materials.

Backloading means your belongings travel in truck space that is already heading your way. It can reduce costs when you are flexible about dates and your load fits the available space. Declutter first
You are paying for space. Selling, donating or disposing of what you will not use in the new home is the most reliable way to lower the bill, and it costs nothing but time.
Stay flexible on dates
A movable date opens up more options, including backloads and off-peak slots. Naming a single fixed day at month-end in January narrows things considerably.
Compare quotes like for like
Check what each quote actually includes: insurance, packing materials, disassembly and reassembly, fuel, tolls, and whether the price is guaranteed or an estimate that can move.
Sort out access and parking early
Confirm lift bookings, loading docks and any council parking permit before the day. Crews waiting for access are still on the clock.
Pack properly if you are packing yourself
Well-packed, uniform boxes stack efficiently and use less space than loose or half-filled cartons. Poor packing costs volume and risks damage.
Book ahead in peak periods
