Estimate your interstate move
How this estimate is calculated
We want you to see the working, because a number without a method is not much use when you are budgeting.
Each route in the calculator carries a third-party industry benchmark rate per cubic metre. Well-travelled corridors such as Melbourne to Sydney carry a lower rate than long or remote routes, because trucks run them constantly and rarely travel empty.
Your home size sets the volume we price on, using the planning figures below:
- Studio / 1 bedroom — 18 m³
- 2 bedroom — 23 m³
- 3 bedroom house — 35 m³
- 4 bedroom house — 55 m³
- 5+ bedroom house — 65 m³
The calculator multiplies that volume by the rate for the route you have selected, and shows the result as a single estimated moving cost. On a route benchmarked at $135 per cubic metre, a three-bedroom house works out at 35 × $135 = $4,725. On that same rate, a one-bedroom move is 18 × $135 = $2,430, a two-bedroom 23 × $135 = $3,105, a four-bedroom 55 × $135 = $7,425 and a five-bedroom 65 × $135 = $8,775.
$135 per cubic metre is an example, not a universal rate. Every route carries its own rate, which is shown beside your result, so the same home size returns a different estimate depending on which two cities you choose.
These volumes are planning assumptions, not measurements of your home. Two three-bedroom houses can differ by several cubic metres depending on furniture, storage and how much has been decluttered. Treat every figure here as an indicative planning estimate, not a quotation.
What affects interstate moving cost?
Distance and route
Longer routes cost more, but not proportionally. Well-travelled corridors such as Melbourne to Sydney are cheaper per cubic metre than remote routes, because trucks run them constantly and rarely travel empty.
Volume of belongings
Interstate moving is priced on the space your goods occupy in the truck. Volume matters far more than weight for most households.
Property access
How close the truck can get to your door changes how long loading takes. A long carry from the street adds labour at both ends.
Stairs and lifts
Walk-ups add time. Buildings with lifts are usually easier, provided the lift can be booked and the loading dock reserved for your window.
Truck parking distance
In dense suburbs a permit may be needed to park a large truck near the property. Sorting that out in advance keeps the clock down.
Packing requirements
Whether you pack yourself or have it done, and how much fragile or awkward material is involved, changes both time and materials.
Heavy and specialist items
Pianos, pool tables, safes, large appliances and gym equipment need particular handling and sometimes extra crew.
Moving date and peak season
Month-end, weekends and the summer period are the busiest windows. Mid-month and mid-week dates are usually easier to secure.
Availability and backloading
If your goods can travel in space already committed to another job, the cost can fall. It depends on what is running when you need it.
Storage requirements
When settlement dates do not line up, goods may need to be held between pickup and delivery, which adds handling and storage.
How to reduce the cost of an interstate move
Consider backloading
Backloading means your belongings travel in truck space that is already heading your way. It can reduce costs when you are flexible about dates and your load fits the available space. It is not always available, and we will not promise a fixed saving — it depends entirely on what is running on your route at the time. Ask us when you enquire.
Declutter first
You are paying for space. Selling, donating or disposing of what you will not use in the new home is the most reliable way to lower the bill, and it costs nothing but time.
Stay flexible on dates
A movable date opens up more options, including backloads and off-peak slots. Naming a single fixed day at month-end in January narrows things considerably.
Compare quotes like for like
Check what each quote actually includes: insurance, packing materials, disassembly and reassembly, fuel, tolls, and whether the price is guaranteed or an estimate that can move.
Sort out access and parking early
Confirm lift bookings, loading docks and any council parking permit before the day. Crews waiting for access are still on the clock.
Pack properly if you are packing yourself
Well-packed, uniform boxes stack efficiently and use less space than loose or half-filled cartons. Poor packing costs volume and risks damage.
Book ahead in peak periods
Summer, month-ends and public holiday weekends fill early. Booking further out gives you more choice of date and crew.
Want the real cost of your interstate move?
The calculator above is a planning tool built on industry benchmarks. It cannot see your home. For a move-specific quotation, we need your pickup and delivery addresses, home size and inventory, access details at both ends, your preferred moving date, packing requirements and any special items.
Frequently asked questions
How much does an interstate move cost?
It depends on how much you are moving and which route you are on. Interstate moving is priced per cubic metre, so a three-bedroom household of about 35 m³ ranges from roughly $4,000 on the cheapest corridors to around $12,600 on the dearest. Shorter east-coast corridors such as Brisbane to Sydney sit at the lower end; long routes such as Sydney to Hobart sit at the top. Use the calculator above for a route-specific figure, then request a quote for a real price.
How much does it cost to move from Melbourne to Sydney?
Melbourne to Sydney is benchmarked at about $135 per cubic metre, one of the lowest rates in the country because trucks run the corridor constantly. On that rate a three-bedroom household of 35 m³ comes to roughly $4,725, a two-bedroom of 23 m³ to about $3,105, and a studio or one-bedroom of 18 m³ to about $2,430.
How much does it cost to move from Sydney to Melbourne?
Sydney to Melbourne is also benchmarked near $135 per cubic metre, so a three-bedroom household of 35 m³ works out at roughly $4,725. Rates can differ slightly by direction because truck availability differs each way.
How is interstate moving cost calculated?
Interstate moves are usually priced on the volume your goods occupy, measured in cubic metres, multiplied by a rate for the route. Access, stairs, packing, heavy items, timing and storage are then added. This differs from local moves, which are commonly charged by the hour.
How many cubic metres do I need for a 2 bedroom home?
It varies considerably with furniture and how much you are taking. For planning purposes the calculator prices a two-bedroom move at 23 cubic metres, then multiplies that by the rate for your route.
How many cubic metres do I need for a 3 bedroom home?
A three-bedroom house varies with how much has accumulated and how much has been decluttered. For planning purposes the calculator prices a three-bedroom move at 35 cubic metres, then multiplies that by the rate for your route.
Is interstate moving charged by cubic metre?
Usually yes. Volume in cubic metres is the standard basis for interstate pricing in Australia, because it determines how much of the truck your goods occupy. Local moves are more often charged hourly.
Does backloading reduce interstate moving costs?
It can. Backloading uses truck space already committed to a journey on your route, so it is generally cheaper than a dedicated truck. It requires flexibility on dates and depends on what is running when you need it. We cannot guarantee a specific saving in advance.
What makes interstate moving more expensive?
Long or remote routes, large volumes, difficult access, multiple flights of stairs, full packing services, heavy specialist items such as pianos, peak-season dates and storage between pickup and delivery. Remote routes cost more per cubic metre because trucks often return empty.
How far in advance should I book an interstate removalist?
Book as early as you can once your dates are firm, and expect to need more notice for summer, month-ends and public holiday weekends. More notice generally means more choice of date and better access to backloading options.
Are packing services included in interstate moving costs?
Not automatically — packing is normally quoted separately because it depends on how much you want done and how much fragile material is involved. Tell us what you need when you request a quote and it will be itemised.
Can Apex Moving move furniture interstate?
