Apex Moving is a Melbourne removalist company, and furniture removals are one of the jobs we take on most often. That might be a single lounge across town, a bedroom suite going to a new address, or the large pieces from a home where you are handling the boxes yourself.

Furniture is usually the part of a move that decides how the day goes. It is heavy, it is awkward to carry, and it has to fit through whatever doorway, stairwell or lift the building gives you. We wrap and protect it, take apart what needs to come apart, load it, drive it, and put it back together in the room you want it.

Tell us what needs moving and where it has to go, and we will come back with a price. You can book your move online, get in touch, call 0470 515 895 or email info@apexmoving.com.au any day of the week.

Our Furniture Removal Service

  • Sofas and loungesTwo, three and four seater lounges, modular pieces and recliners. Usually the hardest thing in the house to get through a doorway, so we check the path before anyone lifts.
  • Beds and mattressesBed bases, ensembles and mattresses. Most bases have to come apart to get out of a room safely, and we put them back together at the other end.
  • Dining tables and chairsTables, chairs, buffets and sideboards. Pieces with a glass or stone top are protected before they go near the truck.
  • Wardrobes and cabinetsWardrobes, chests of drawers, bookcases and shelving. Empty them before the day, because loaded furniture is much heavier and the contents shift in transit.
  • Desks and office furnitureDesks, office chairs, filing cabinets and storage units, either as single items or in small groups.
  • Heavy and fragile piecesFridges and washing machines. Anything unusually heavy, fragile or valuable, such as a piano, a safe or a stone topped table, is planned for before the day rather than on it.

A furniture removal is planned and priced around the items themselves rather than the size of the property. We work from what is going, how heavy and awkward each piece is, and what the access is like at both ends. That is a different calculation to a full household move, and it usually means a smaller crew and a shorter job.

If you have something unusually heavy, fragile or valuable, such as a piano, a safe, a stone topped table, or a large mirror or artwork, tell us when you enquire rather than on the day, so it is planned for before anyone starts lifting.

Wrapping, Protection and Reassembly

Wrapping and protection are part of the job rather than an extra. Soft furnishings and mattresses are covered, and pieces with a glass or stone top are protected before they go near the truck.

Taking furniture apart and putting it back together is also included. Beds and flat pack furniture often have to come apart to get out of a room safely, and we reassemble them in the room you want them at the other end rather than leaving the pieces stacked in a hallway.

What a Furniture Move Can Cover

Single Items

A lot of our furniture work is one piece. A lounge that will not fit in a car, a bed frame going to a family member, a dining table bought secondhand that needs to get home. You do not need a full removal booking for this, and it is usually the quickest and least expensive job we do.

Tell us the item, both addresses, and what the access is like at each end. That is generally enough for us to price it.

Several Pieces or a Part Load

Part loads sit between a single item and a full move. It might be the contents of one or two rooms, the furniture you are taking and nothing else, or the large items from a home where you are packing the boxes yourself.

These are worth planning as one job rather than several trips. We work out the truck and the crew from the list of items and the access, so the more accurately you describe what is going, the closer the quote will be.

Furniture Going Between Properties

Furniture does not always move because someone is moving house. We collect and deliver pieces between addresses for customers who have bought or sold furniture, are helping family, are furnishing a rental or a property being staged for sale, or are shifting items between a home and a workplace.

If the item is being collected from a retailer, a warehouse or a private seller, let us know the pickup hours and whether someone will be there to release it.

Office and Workplace Furniture

We move desks, office chairs, filing cabinets, storage units and boardroom tables, either as individual items or in small groups. If you are relocating a whole workplace rather than moving a few pieces, our office removals service covers the full job and can be planned around your trading hours.

The Large Items From a Home Move

Some customers pack their own boxes and only want the heavy pieces handled, and we are happy to do exactly that. If you would rather hand over the whole household, including boxes, whitegoods and the contents of the garage and shed, our house removals service is the better fit.

What to Expect on a Furniture Move

  • Before we liftWe look at the piece and the path it has to travel: the room, the doorway, the turn on the stairs, the lift if there is one, and where the truck can legally stand.
  • ProtectionLarger items are wrapped before they are lifted. Soft furnishings and mattresses are covered, and glass or stone tops are protected.
  • Carrying and loadingEach piece is carried by as many people as it actually needs, and loaded in an order that keeps everything stable for the drive.
  • Delivery and placementFurniture goes into the room you nominate, anything we took apart is reassembled, and we check the load with you before we finish.

When a Piece Will Not Fit

Occasionally something will not come out the way it went in. Corner lounges, king bed bases, tall wardrobes and large fridges are the usual ones, particularly in older homes with narrow hallways or a tight turn on the stairs.

Where a piece comes apart, we take it apart. Where it does not, the options are usually a different exit, or a decision not to take it. This is far easier to sort out at the quote stage than on the morning, which is why we ask about doorways, stairs and lifts early.

How a Furniture Move Is Priced

A furniture move is quoted on what is going and how hard it is to move, rather than a flat rate per item. The number and size of the pieces, the access at both addresses, the distance between them, and whether anything needs particular care all change the price.

We confirm the price with you before the job is booked. If you would like to understand what drives the cost of a move more generally, our guide to moving costs in Melbourne goes through it in more detail.

Getting Furniture Ready and Checking Access

Measure Before the Day, Not On It

If you have anything large, measure it, then measure what it has to pass through: the doorway, the hallway width, the turn in the stairwell, and the lift car if there is one. Compare the smallest opening against the largest dimension of the piece. Knowing a week out that a lounge will not fit through a stairwell is a very different problem to discovering it with the lounge on the landing.

Clear the Path

Move smaller items, rugs, pot plants and anything breakable out of the route between the furniture and the front door, and prop doors open where you can. A clear path is the simplest thing you can do to make a furniture move faster, and it reduces the chance of something being knocked on the way through.

Stairs, Lifts and Parking

Tell us which floor the furniture is on and whether there is a lift. If you are in an apartment building, check with building management whether the lift has to be booked and what they need from us, because many buildings will not release a lift without paperwork from the removalist.

The truck also needs somewhere legal to stand near the entrance. On permit parking streets, or at buildings with a loading dock and a booking sheet, this often has to be arranged several days in advance. Tell us the address and we will tell you what is likely to work.

Empty and Prepare Each Piece

Empty drawers, wardrobes and cabinets before the day. Furniture is much heavier when it is loaded and the contents shift in transit. Remove or secure glass shelves and loose doors, and take off anything that simply sits on top.

Point Out Anything Needing Extra Care

If a piece is antique, high value, already damaged, or has a finish that marks easily, say so before we start. Knowing which items need the most care changes how they are wrapped and where they sit in the truck.

Furniture Removals Across Melbourne and Victoria

We move furniture right across metropolitan Melbourne, from inner suburb apartments and terraces to family homes in the outer growth corridors. Where you are moving from usually changes the job more than the distance does. Inner city addresses tend to be about permit parking, loading docks, booked lifts and narrow streets, while outer suburbs are generally easier to load but mean a longer drive at each end.

If your move is local, our Melbourne removalist page covers moves within the city. For furniture going to or from somewhere else in the state, see Victoria removalists, and if it is leaving Victoria altogether, interstate removals covers long distance jobs out of Melbourne. You can also check your suburb on our areas we serve page.

If there is a gap between moving out and moving in, we can store your furniture in Melbourne until you are ready to take delivery. Storage is available at our Melbourne end only, so mention it when you enquire rather than once the truck is loaded.

What You Get With Apex Moving

You deal with the same team from the first enquiry through to the last piece being put in place, so nothing has to be explained twice. We confirm the price with you before the job is booked rather than settling it on the day, and that price is built from your actual items and access rather than a flat rate.

Wrapping and protection are included rather than charged as an extra, and so is taking furniture apart and reassembling it. We provide fully guaranteed transit insurance to protect your goods throughout the move. Full cover details and policy terms are confirmed directly at booking.

We cover metropolitan Melbourne, regional Victoria and interstate routes from the one company, and we are contactable every day of the week, including while your furniture is in transit. If you would like to know more about who you are dealing with, our about us page has the background, and our removalist services page brings every option together in one place.

If you would rather talk it through than fill in a form, call 0470 515 895 and we will work out what your move needs.

How a Furniture Move Works

Tell Us What Is Going

Start with the list of furniture rather than the number of bedrooms. Item by item is ideal, and photos or a short walk through video are better still for anything large or unusual. Then tell us the access at both addresses: the floor, the stairs, the lift, the doorways, and where a truck can park.

Quote and Booking

We come back with what the job needs, what it will cost and what is included. Once you accept, we lock in the date and the time. If your date depends on a settlement, a lease end or a delivery from a retailer, say so now, so we can plan around a date that might shift.

Before the Day

Empty the drawers and cabinets, clear the path, and confirm the lift booking or the parking if either is needed. If anything has been added to or taken off the list since the quote, tell us then rather than on the morning, because it can change the truck or the crew we send.

On Moving Day

We walk through with you first and agree what is going. Each piece is wrapped and protected, taken apart where it needs to be, carried out along the path we agreed, and loaded so it stays secure for the drive.

Delivery and Placement

At the other end, furniture goes into the room you nominate rather than being left inside the front door, and anything we took apart is reassembled. We check the load with you before we finish, so anything in the wrong room gets moved while we are still there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you move a single piece of furniture?

Yes. Single item moves are one of the most common reasons customers book us, and you do not need a full removal booking for one. Tell us the item, the pickup and delivery addresses, and the access at each end, and we can price it from that.

What types of furniture do you move?

Lounges, bed bases and mattresses, wardrobes, chests of drawers, dining tables and chairs, buffets and sideboards, bookcases, desks, filing cabinets, fridges and washing machines are the most common. If you have something unusually heavy or fragile, such as a piano, a safe or a stone topped table, mention it when you enquire.

How do you work out the price for a furniture move?

We quote on what is going and how hard it is to move, not a flat rate per item. The number and size of the pieces, the access at both addresses, the distance between them and any items needing particular care all affect it. We confirm the price with you before the job is booked.

Do you wrap and protect furniture during the move?

Yes, and it is included rather than charged as an extra. Soft furnishings and mattresses are covered, and pieces with a glass or stone top are protected before they are moved.

Do you take furniture apart and put it back together?

Yes, that is part of the job. Beds and flat pack furniture often have to come apart to get out of a room safely, and we reassemble them in the room you want them at the new address.

What happens if a piece will not fit through the door or stairwell?

Where the piece comes apart, we take it apart. Where it does not, the options are usually a different exit or a decision not to take it. Measuring doorways, stairwell turns and lift cars before the day is the best way to avoid the problem, which is why we ask about access at the quote stage.

Do you move furniture in apartment buildings?

Yes. Tell us the floor, whether there is a lift and whether it has to be booked, and where the truck can stand. Many buildings will not release a lift without paperwork from the removalist, so it helps to check with building management as soon as your date is set.

Do I need to empty drawers and wardrobes first?

Yes, please empty them before the day. Loaded furniture is much heavier to carry and the contents shift in transit. It also helps to remove or secure glass shelves and loose doors.

Do I need a furniture move or a full house removal?

If you are counting items, it is a furniture move. If you are counting bedrooms and want the boxes, whitegoods and the contents of the garage handled as well, our house removals service is the better fit. You are welcome to pack your own boxes and have us move only the large pieces.

Do you move furniture outside Melbourne?

Yes. We move furniture across metropolitan Melbourne and to and from regional Victoria, and we also handle long distance jobs leaving the state. Tell us both addresses when you enquire so the travel is built into the quote.
