What a House Move Costs in Melbourne
House moves within Melbourne are charged by the hour, and the crew size is what moves the number. Our rates include GST and have a two-hour minimum:
- 2 movers and a standard truck: $140 to $180 per hour
- 3 movers and a large truck: $180 to $260 per hour

Apartment, Unit and Townhouse Moves
Roughly half the house moves we do in Melbourne are not houses at all. Apartments, units and townhouses each come with their own obstacles, and they are the ones most likely to cost you time on the day if nobody has checked them beforehand.

Most apartment buildings require a lift booking through building management, and many will not release the lift without a certificate of currency from your removalist. Loading zones and parking

Walk-up units and narrow townhouse stairwells are where furniture gets stuck. How Our House Moving Process Works
1. Tell us about the house
We start with the property rather than a price. How many bedrooms, how many levels, what is in the garage and shed, whether there is anything heavy or fragile such as a piano, a safe or a stone dining table. Then the access at both ends: stairs, lifts, driveway width, where a truck can legally park. A room-by-room list or a walk-through video is ideal.
2. Your quote and your date
We come back with the crew size, truck and hourly rate for your job, and what is included. Once you accept, we lock in the date and time. If your move hangs on a settlement or a lease end, tell us then, because those dates move and we would rather plan for it than react to it.
3. The week before
We confirm the details that tend to change: whether the lift is booked, whether the parking permit came through, whether the settlement is still on track, and whether you have added or removed anything significant. This is also when we finalise packing if you have asked us to do it.
4. Moving day
We walk the property with you first so we both know what is going and what is staying. Then we wrap and protect, disassemble, and load room by room, keeping the things you need first accessible at the back of the truck. Nothing leaves until you have checked the cupboards, the shed and the roof space with us.
5. Delivery and setting up
At the new address we unload into the rooms you nominate rather than stacking everything in the hallway, reassemble the beds and furniture we took apart, and take the packing debris away. Packing and Unpacking
Packing is usually the part people underestimate. A three-bedroom home takes most of a weekend to pack properly, and badly packed boxes are the main reason things break in transit rather than the drive itself.
You have three options, and you can mix them:
- Pack it yourself. The cheapest route. Start with what you do not use daily and work forward from there.
- Have us pack the difficult parts. Most people who ask for help ask for the kitchen, glassware, artwork and the wardrobe. These are the slowest rooms and the easiest to damage.
- Have us pack everything. We arrive before moving day, pack the house out and label it by room, so the move itself is just loading.
If you are packing yourself, use proper moving boxes rather than supermarket cartons, keep the heavy things in small boxes and the light bulky things in large ones, fill the gaps so nothing shifts, and write the destination room on the side of the box rather than the top. You will be looking at a stack, not a floor.

Preparing for Moving Day
Nothing here is complicated, but it all takes longer than expected. Working backwards from your date makes the last week much calmer.
Three to four weeks out
Confirm your moving date with us and book it in. Start sorting what you are not taking, since anything sold or donated now is something you are not paying to move. If you are in an apartment, book the lift. If you are on a permit-parking street, check whether your council needs a parking permit for the truck, because they generally take several days.
Two weeks out
Arrange your mail redirection with Australia Post and update your address on your driver licence and vehicle registration with VicRoads. Contact your electricity, gas, water and internet providers to set connection and disconnection dates. Start packing the rooms you barely use.
One week out
Finish the bulk of your packing and label everything by room. Run down the fridge and freezer. Drain the fuel from the mower and disconnect the gas bottle from the BBQ, since dangerous goods cannot travel on a removal truck. Arrange care for pets and young children on the day if you can, as it makes a noticeable difference.
The night before
Pack a box you keep with you: medication, chargers, documents, keys, toiletries, a change of clothes, and the kettle and mugs. Defrost the fridge so it can be emptied and wiped out. Confirm parking and access at both addresses.
On the day
Be there when we arrive so we can walk through the property together and agree what goes where. Keep the box you set aside in your own car. Before we leave the old address, check the cupboards, the roof space, the shed and the garage, because that is where things get left behind.
Storage Between Moves
Settlement dates do not always line up, and leases rarely end on the day the new place is ready. If there is a gap, we can store your belongings in Melbourne until you can take delivery.
