Flemington sits about 4 kilometres north-west of the CBD, split between the City of Moonee Valley and the City of Melbourne, between Kensington, Ascot Vale and the Maribyrnong River flats. Most people know it for the racecourse, but as a place to move it is defined by its housing: rows of single-fronted Victorian cottages and terraces on narrow streets, mid-century walk-up flats, and the high-rise housing along Racecourse Road.

Race days are a real scheduling factor

Flemington Racecourse holds meetings through the year and a major carnival in spring. On those days Racecourse Road, Epsom Road and the surrounding streets carry heavy crowd traffic, parking restrictions change, and the racecourse station reopens for events. It is not a minor inconvenience for a truck. When you give us your date we will check what is scheduled and, if it clashes, either start well before the crowds or suggest a different day.

Narrow streets and permit parking

Away from the main roads, Flemington’s residential streets are narrow, often one-way, with parking on both sides and resident permit zones through much of the area. A full-size truck frequently cannot stop outside the door. We work out the standing spot and the carry distance when we quote rather than on the morning, and where a temporary parking permit is needed your council — Moonee Valley or Melbourne depending on the street — is the body to arrange it with. Start that early.

Cottages, flats and towers

The original cottages have narrow hallways, doorways below modern standard and steep staircases, so wardrobes, sofas and fridges often need to come apart or go in another way. Walk-up flats mean stairs rather than a lift. The high-rise buildings are different again: a booked service lift, a set loading window and building rules that need arranging in advance. All three are routine, but each changes the crew size and the time, which is why they belong in the quote.

Getting around

Newmarket station on the Craigieburn line serves the suburb, with the route 57 tram running along Racecourse Road into the city. For trucks, Racecourse Road, Epsom Road and Mount Alexander Road are the main connections, and CityLink and the Tullamarine Freeway are close, which makes moves to the airport corridor, the north-west or interstate straightforward once loaded.

Many stay nearby: Kensington, Ascot Vale, Moonee Ponds, North Melbourne or Travancore. Others are people leaving a cottage or a flat for more space further out. Either way, the load-out plan is what we work through with you first, because in Flemington the street is nearly always the constraint.
