Hampton East sits in the City of Bayside, roughly 15 kilometres south-east of the CBD, inland from Hampton between Moorabbin, Highett, Bentleigh and Cheltenham. Unlike the bayside suburbs on the other side of the highway it has no foreshore, and its housing reflects a different history: postwar brick and weatherboard homes on regular blocks, older public-housing stock, and a very large amount of townhouse and unit development built on those blocks over the past two decades.

Shared driveways and long carries

The infill is the defining access issue. Two, three or four townhouses now commonly share a single driveway that runs back from the street with a bend and no turning space at the end. A large truck usually cannot get past the first dwelling, so the practical answer is to park at the front and carry — straightforward when it is planned into the quote, and costly in time when it is not. When we quote we ask which unit you are and how far back it sits, then size the crew accordingly.

Original homes and newer townhouses

The remaining postwar houses have narrow hallways and door openings well under modern widths, so fridges and larger lounges often need internal doors off their hinges, and most have a garage or shed holding more than an inventory captures. The townhouses replacing them are the reverse: easy entry, then a narrow straight staircase with a tight landing turn where wardrobes, bed bases and larger sofas stall. We measure the awkward pieces against the route beforehand either way.

Main roads and loading

Nepean Highway and South Road both run along the suburb and carry clearway restrictions through peak periods, so any address fronting them is loaded outside those windows. The residential streets behind are flat and quiet but narrow, with cars parked both sides leaving one working lane, so a smaller truck is often the faster choice.

Getting around

Hampton East has no railway station of its own, with Moorabbin and Highett the nearest connections on the Frankston line and buses across the suburb. For trucks the useful routes are Nepean Highway, South Road, Bluff Road and East Boundary Road.

Most stay nearby: Moorabbin, Highett, Bentleigh, Cheltenham, Hampton or Brighton East, with a lot of movement between the older houses and the new townhouses a few streets away. There is also a steady flow of first-home buyers and downsizers drawn by the townhouse stock and the transport links.
