Removalists in Mont Albert
Mont Albert sits in the City of Whitehorse, roughly 12 kilometres east of the CBD, between Box Hill, Surrey Hills, Balwyn and Mont Albert North. It is one of the more consistent period suburbs in the east: Federation and interwar homes on generous blocks, wide streets with mature elms and oaks, and a strong heritage character that has limited how much of the original stock has been replaced.
Period homes and internal access
The street is rarely the problem here. Most houses have a driveway, the carriageways are wide enough to position a truck, and the carry from the kerb is short. What slows a Mont Albert move is the inside of the house: hallways narrower than they look, door openings well under modern widths, arched entries that will not take a wide lounge, and in the two-storey homes a staircase with a tight turn at the landing. Original floorboards, leadlight, plaster ceilings and picture rails all need protection rather than speed. We identify the pieces that will not clear the route when we quote, so dismantling or an alternative route is planned rather than improvised.
Rebuilds and townhouses
Where original homes have been replaced or extended, the profile flips: wide entries and a straight staircase, but a landing turn that still stops wardrobes and bed bases, and often a basement or lower-level garage reached by a steep internal flight. The townhouse pairs on the subdivided blocks generally share a driveway with limited turning room, so the truck parks at the front and the crew carries.
Streets, trees and truck height
The mature street trees that make the suburb what it is also sit low over the carriageway in places, and truck height is worth checking on the narrower streets. Cars parked both sides on the smaller residential streets leave one working lane, which makes a large vehicle slow to position. Where that is likely we send a smaller truck and do an extra run rather than blocking the street.
Getting around
The Belgrave and Lilydale railway line runs along the southern edge of the suburb, and trams run the length of Whitehorse Road. For trucks the useful routes are Whitehorse Road, Union Road, Elgar Road, Mont Albert Road and Belmore Road, with the Eastern Freeway a short run north. Whitehorse Road carries clearway restrictions in peak periods and tram tracks limit where a truck can stop, so loading happens on side streets.
Where Mont Albert moves go
Most stay in the east: Box Hill, Surrey Hills, Balwyn, Canterbury, Blackburn or Camberwell. There is also a steady pattern of downsizing out of the large period homes into local townhouses and apartments, and families moving in for the schools and the housing stock.
