Blackburn South sits in the City of Whitehorse, roughly 17 kilometres east of the CBD, between Blackburn, Burwood East, Forest Hill and Box Hill South. It was built out mainly through the postwar decades: single-storey brick and weatherboard homes on generous blocks, wide quiet streets, mature gardens, and gently undulating land running down towards the creek reserves.
Battle-axe blocks and shared driveways
The large original allotments have been steadily subdivided, and the suburb now has a high proportion of rear and battle-axe properties reached by a narrow shared driveway running 20 or 30 metres back from the street. Whether a loaded truck can get down that drive, and whether it can get back out, is the single most useful thing to establish before the day. Where it cannot, we plan a shuttle from the street and include the carry in the price rather than adding it on the morning. We ask about the driveway width, the bend and any overhanging trees when we quote.
Original homes and newer townhouses
The remaining postwar houses have narrow hallways and tight door openings, and fridges and larger lounges often need internal doors off their hinges. Their block sizes also mean sheds, workshops, garden machinery and under-house or roof storage are common, and those hold more than people account for. The newer townhouses replacing them have the opposite profile: easy entry, then a narrow straight staircase with a tight turn at the landing where wardrobes and bed bases stall. Either way we measure the awkward pieces against the route beforehand.
Getting around
Blackburn South has no railway station of its own, with Blackburn and Laburnum stations to the north and buses serving the suburb. For trucks the useful routes are Canterbury Road, Middleborough Road, Springvale Road and Blackburn Road, with the Eastern Freeway and EastLink a short run away. Canterbury Road and Springvale Road are slow through both peaks and carry restrictions on parts, so start times are set to work around them.
Where Blackburn South moves go
Most stay in the east: Blackburn, Box Hill South, Burwood East, Forest Hill, Vermont or Mount Waverley. There is also a regular pattern of downsizing out of the large blocks into the local townhouses, and families moving in for the block sizes and the schools.
