Removalists in Carlton North
Carlton North sits in the City of Yarra, roughly three kilometres north of the CBD, between Carlton, Princes Hill, Fitzroy North and Brunswick East. It is one of Melbourne\u2019s most intact Victorian suburbs: terrace rows and double-fronted period houses on a grid that mixes wide boulevard streets with much tighter side streets, bluestone laneways running behind, and small shopping strips along Rathdowne and Nicholson.
Wide streets and narrow ones
The suburb is deceptive. Some streets are broad enough to position a truck without difficulty, and the ones a few blocks over are barely wide enough for a car to pass a parked vehicle. Almost nothing has off-street parking, and the whole area is permit-restricted with cars nose to tail on both sides. Where the truck can stand determines how much of the day is spent carrying, so on the tighter streets a temporary parking arrangement through the council is worth organising in advance — notice is generally required and it cannot be sorted out on the morning.
Terraces, staircases and cellars
The two-storey terraces have narrow hallways, period-width doorways, and a steep staircase with a tight turn and limited headroom at the top. Sofas, mattresses, wardrobes and fridges are the pieces that do not simply go up, and the answer is usually dismantling, a first-floor window route or extra crew. Many of these houses also have a cellar or basement store, and long rear extensions that add distance to every trip. Original floorboards, tessellated tiles, cast-iron balustrades and leadlight all need protecting on the way through. We identify the awkward pieces and the route when we quote.
Laneways and rear access
Many properties back onto a bluestone laneway, and where there is a rear gate or garage that is often a far better loading point than the street. Lanes here are narrow, sometimes uneven and frequently partly blocked by parked cars or bins, so it is worth checking rather than assuming. If the lane works we use it; if not, we plan the front carry properly.
Getting around
Carlton North is served by trams along Nicholson Street, Lygon Street and Rathdowne Street, with buses across the inner north and the CBD a short trip. For trucks the practical routes are Nicholson Street, Lygon Street, Princes Street and Alexandra Parade, most of which carry clearway restrictions in peak periods and tram tracks that limit where a vehicle can stop.
Where Carlton North moves go
Most stay inner-north: Carlton, Princes Hill, Fitzroy North, Brunswick, Parkville or North Melbourne. There is also a strong flow of apartment and share-house moves driven by the rental stock and the nearby universities, and of households moving out to the middle suburbs when the terrace runs out of room.
