What we offer

in Clifton Hill

Apex Moving provides removalist services in Clifton Hill, an inner-northern suburb of Victorian terraces on a genuine hill. Off-street parking is scarce, streets are narrow and permit-restricted, and the staircases inside are the tightest part of the job.

Removalists in Clifton Hill

Clifton Hill sits in the City of Yarra, roughly four kilometres north-east of the CBD, between Fitzroy North, Collingwood, Northcote and the Yarra and Merri Creek parklands. It is one of the more intact Victorian suburbs in the inner north: terrace rows and period cottages on a tight grid, bluestone laneways behind most streets, a small number of converted warehouses and apartments, and — as the name suggests — a real slope through the middle of it.

Parking and the slope

Almost nothing here has off-street parking, and the streets are permit-restricted with cars parked nose to tail on both sides. Where the truck can stand determines how much of the day is carrying rather than loading, so on the tighter streets a temporary parking arrangement through the council is worth organising in advance — notice is generally required and it cannot be sorted out on the morning. The hill adds a second consideration: a number of properties sit above the footpath with a flight of front steps, and some streets are steep enough that where a truck stops matters for the trolley run as well as the walk.

Terraces and steep staircases

The two-storey terraces have narrow hallways, door openings well under modern widths, and a steep staircase with a tight turn at the top and limited headroom. Sofas, mattresses, wardrobes and fridges are the pieces that do not simply go up, and the answer is usually dismantling, a first-floor window route or extra crew rather than force. Original floorboards, cast-iron balustrades, tessellated tiles and leadlight all need protecting on the way through. We identify the awkward pieces and the route when we quote so the plan exists before the truck arrives.

Laneways and rear access

Many properties back onto a bluestone laneway, and a rear gate or garage can be a far better loading point than the street. Lanes here are narrow, sometimes steep and uneven, and often partly blocked by parked cars or bins, so it is worth checking rather than assuming.

Getting around

Clifton Hill station is a junction on the Hurstbridge and Mernda lines, and trams run along Queens Parade and Smith Street. For trucks the practical routes are Queens Parade, Heidelberg Road, Hoddle Street and Alexandra Parade, all of which carry clearway restrictions in peak periods and tram tracks that limit where a vehicle can stop, so loading happens on the side streets wherever possible.

Where Clifton Hill moves go

Most stay inner-north: Fitzroy North, Collingwood, Northcote, Abbotsford, Carlton North or Thornbury. There is also a strong flow of apartment and share-house moves driven by the rental stock, and of households moving out to the middle suburbs when the terrace runs out of room.
