Removalists in Fairhaven
Fairhaven sits in the Surf Coast Shire on the Great Ocean Road, between Aireys Inlet and Lorne, roughly 110 kilometres south-west of Melbourne. It is a small coastal settlement rather than a town: houses set into the hillside above a long surf beach, coastal scrub and bushland reserve between them, and narrow roads climbing away from the highway.
Steep blocks, narrow roads and steps
This is the defining problem of a Fairhaven move and it is worth being direct about. Access roads are narrow and winding with limited turning space, driveways climb or drop steeply from them, and a great many houses are reached by a long flight of timber steps up or down through the scrub. Steps rule out trolleys for most of the load and mean more crew rather than a bigger truck. A large removals vehicle simply will not get into some of these properties; where that is the case we plan a shuttle with a smaller vehicle from a workable point on the road and price the carry into the quote rather than arguing about it on the morning.
Houses built into the hillside
Homes here are commonly multi-level, with decks, external stairs and living areas on a different level from the entry, and the garage — where there is one — often sits well away from the front door. Wardrobes, sofas and appliances frequently need to come apart or take a deck route. We look at the approach and the internal route together, because on a hillside block they are the same problem. Salt air also means furniture should not sit outside longer than necessary, so we stage the load rather than unpacking onto the driveway.
The road and the season
The Great Ocean Road is slow by nature and slower again through summer, holiday weekends and event periods, when traffic along the coast builds considerably. Travel time is genuinely longer than the distance suggests, and we schedule for the real drive. Mid-week bookings outside the holiday peaks are easier to secure and easier to work in.
Getting around
There is no rail service along this stretch of coast; the area runs on road, with Torquay and Geelong the nearest main centres and services. For trucks the only practical route is the Great Ocean Road itself, connecting back through Anglesea and Torquay to the Princes Highway.
Where Fairhaven moves go
Many stay on the coast: Aireys Inlet, Anglesea, Lorne, Torquay or Jan Juc. The other regular pattern is the long move — households relocating to or from Melbourne or Geelong, whether retiring to the coast, converting a holiday house to a permanent home, or heading back closer to the city.
