Ferntree Gully sits in the City of Knox, roughly 30 kilometres east of the CBD, where the suburban grid meets the western foothills of the Dandenong Ranges. It is a large, mixed suburb: flatter postwar and 1970s housing on regular blocks in the northern and western streets, and steeper, more heavily treed blocks as you move towards Upper Ferntree Gully and the national park boundary.

The driveway is the job

This is the practical difference between Ferntree Gully and most of suburban Melbourne. Plenty of properties here sit above or below street level, on driveways that are long, steep, curved, or all three. A loaded truck cannot always get down or back up safely, and reversing out of a blind, sloping driveway onto a bending street is not something to work out on the morning. We ask about the driveway specifically when quoting, and where the truck cannot get close we plan a shuttle from the nearest safe standing point and include that carry in the price.

Trees, gutters and clearance

Mature eucalypts are part of what makes the area, and they are also a real clearance consideration for a high truck. Overhanging branches, low power lines and narrow verges on the hillside streets all affect where a vehicle can stop. If you can tell us the street and rough position of the property, we can usually work out the constraints before the day.

Split-level homes and what they mean

Much of the housing built into the slope is split-level, with half-flights of stairs between living areas and sometimes a garage well below the main floor. Wardrobes, sofas and appliances often need to come apart or take an external route. It is routine work, but it changes the crew size and the time, which is why it belongs in the quote rather than the invoice.

Getting around

Burwood Highway is the main east-west route through the suburb, with Ferntree Gully and Upper Ferntree Gully stations on the Belgrave line and Mountain Highway and Dorset Road running north-south. EastLink is a short run west, which makes moves to the city, the south-east or interstate straightforward once loaded. Burwood Highway is slow in both peaks, so we usually recommend an early start.

Many stay in the outer east: Boronia, Rowville, Wantirna, Bayswater or Upper Ferntree Gully. There is also a steady flow of people moving down from the hills into flatter properties, and families moving the other way for the space and the setting.
