Ferny Creek sits in the Yarra Ranges, roughly 35 kilometres east of the CBD, on the western slopes of the Dandenong Ranges between Upper Ferntree Gully, Sassafras and Tremont. It is a hill village rather than a suburb: houses on steep treed blocks, tall mountain ash and fern gullies, winding roads with few straight stretches, and properties that sit well above or below the road they are addressed on.

Getting a truck to the door

This is the defining problem of a Dandenongs move and it is worth being direct about it. Driveways here are often steep, narrow, curved and unsealed, with overhanging branches that limit vehicle height, and many have no turning space at the house. Some homes have no vehicle access at all beyond the road, with the front door reached by a long flight of timber steps down or up through the garden. Steps rule out trolleys for most of the load and mean more crew rather than a bigger truck. Wardrobes, sofas and appliances frequently need to come apart or take a deck or window route. We look at the approach and the internal route together when we quote, because on a hill block they are the same problem.

Weather and road conditions

The ranges are wetter, cooler and foggier than the suburbs below, and roads stay damp with leaf litter well after rain. Steep unsealed drives lose traction quickly in those conditions, so on wet days we keep heavy vehicles on sealed surfaces and carry rather than risk a slide or a bogged truck. Scheduling an earlier start also helps, since the mountain roads are slower in poor visibility.

Getting around

Ferny Creek has no railway station, with Upper Ferntree Gully and Belgrave the nearest connections at the foot of the hills and limited local bus service. For trucks the routes that matter are the Mount Dandenong Tourist Road, Ferny Creek Road and the Burwood Highway below. All are winding, so travel time is considerably longer than the distance suggests and we schedule for the real drive rather than the map.
