Removalists in Fitzroy North
Fitzroy North sits in the City of Yarra, roughly four kilometres north of the CBD, between Carlton North, Clifton Hill and Brunswick East. It is one of the older parts of Melbourne and the housing shows it: single and double-fronted Victorian cottages, terrace rows, a scattering of Edwardian homes, converted warehouses and small apartment blocks, arranged on a tight grid of narrow streets with bluestone laneways behind them.
Parking is the job
Very few properties here have off-street parking, and most streets are permit-restricted with cars parked nose to tail on both sides. Where the truck stands determines how long the day takes and how much of it is spent carrying. The City of Yarra issues temporary parking arrangements for works and removals, and on the tighter streets that is worth organising in advance — councils generally need notice, so it is not something to leave to the morning. Where no space can be reserved we plan an early start and, if needed, a smaller shuttle vehicle to the truck.
Narrow terraces and steep stairs
Terraces and cottages here typically have a narrow hallway, doorways well under modern widths, and in the two-storey homes a steep staircase with a tight turn at the top. Sofas, mattresses, wardrobes and fridges are the pieces that do not make it up without a plan, and often the answer is dismantling or a first-floor window rather than force. Original floorboards, plaster arches, leadlight and cast-iron balustrades all need protecting on the way through. We look at the awkward items and the route when we quote so the right crew and equipment turn up.
Laneways and rear access
Many properties back onto a bluestone laneway, and where there is a rear gate or garage that can be a far better loading point than the street. Laneways are narrow, unsealed in places and often blocked by parked cars or bins, so it is worth checking rather than assuming. If the lane works, we use it; if it does not, we plan the front carry properly.
Getting around
Fitzroy North is well served by trams along Brunswick Street, St Georges Road and Nicholson Street, with buses across the suburb and the CBD an easy trip. For trucks the practical routes are Queens Parade, St Georges Road, Nicholson Street and Alexandra Parade, all of which carry clearway restrictions in peak periods. Tram tracks limit where a truck can stop on the main roads, so loading happens on the side streets wherever possible.
Where Fitzroy North moves go
Most stay inner-north: Fitzroy, Carlton North, Clifton Hill, Brunswick, Northcote or Thornbury. There is also a strong flow of apartment and share-house moves driven by the rental stock, and of households moving out to the middle suburbs when the terrace runs out of room.
