Gardenvale is one of Melbourne’s smaller localities, sitting on the boundary between the City of Bayside and the City of Glen Eira, roughly 10 kilometres south-east of the CBD between Brighton, Elsternwick and Elwood. It is built around Gardenvale station on the Sandringham line, with the Nepean Highway running through it, and its housing is a compact mix of interwar homes, low-rise flats and more recent townhouse and apartment development.
Small blocks, tight streets
The practical character of a Gardenvale move comes from the block sizes. Frontages are narrow, driveways where they exist are usually single-width, and several streets carry parking on both sides with restrictions near the station and the highway. A full-size truck cannot always stop outside the door, so we work out the standing spot and the carry distance when we quote rather than on the morning. Martin Street and North Road carry most local traffic. The highway is slow in both peaks and the level of through traffic makes standing a truck on the highway itself impractical, so side-street access is what we plan around.
