Hotham Hill is the elevated northern part of North Melbourne, in the City of Melbourne roughly three kilometres from the CBD, taking its name from the suburb\u2019s original name of Hotham. It is one of the older parts of the city and the housing shows it: Victorian and Edwardian terraces and cottages on a tight grid, bluestone laneways behind most streets, converted warehouses and shops, and apartments among them.

Parking decides the day

Almost no property here has off-street parking, and the streets are permit-restricted with cars parked nose to tail on both sides. Where the truck can stand determines how much of the day is spent carrying rather than loading. On the tighter streets a temporary parking arrangement through the council is worth organising in advance, since notice is generally required and it cannot be sorted out on the morning. Where no space can be held, we plan an early start and, if the street will not take a large vehicle, shuttle to the truck from a workable position nearby.

Terraces, steep stairs and the slope

The two-storey terraces are the defining challenge. Hallways are narrow, door openings are well under modern widths, and the staircase is typically steep with a tight turn at the top and limited headroom. Sofas, mattresses, wardrobes and fridges are the pieces that do not simply go up, and the answer is usually dismantling, a first-floor window route or extra crew rather than force. The ground here also falls away towards the city, so a number of properties add a flight of front steps up from the footpath. Original floorboards, cast-iron balustrades, tessellated tiles and leadlight all need protecting on the way through.

Laneways and rear access

Many properties back onto a bluestone laneway, and where there is a rear gate or garage that can be a far better loading point than the street. Lanes here are narrow, sometimes uneven and often partly blocked by parked cars or bins, so it is worth checking rather than assuming.

Getting around

The area is well served by trams along Peel Street and Flemington Road, with North Melbourne station and the CBD both close. For trucks the practical routes are Flemington Road, Peel Street, Victoria Street and Dryburgh Street, most carrying clearway restrictions in peak periods and tram tracks that limit where a vehicle can stop, so loading happens on the side streets wherever possible.

Most stay inner-city: North Melbourne, Kensington, Parkville, Carlton, West Melbourne or Flemington. There is also a strong flow of apartment and share-house moves driven by the rental stock and the nearby universities and hospitals.
