Kew East sits in the City of Boroondara, roughly seven kilometres east of the CBD, between Kew, Balwyn North and the Yarra River. The housing is mostly interwar and postwar: Californian bungalows, solid brick homes on comfortable blocks, pockets of older units, and a steady replacement of originals with two-storey rebuilds and townhouse pairs. Blocks are generous by inner-eastern standards, which shapes how a move here runs.

Streets, driveways and slope

Almost every house has its own driveway, so kerb competition is rarely the problem. The constraints are width and grade. Many residential streets are narrow with cars parked both sides, which leaves a single working lane and makes reversing a large truck slow rather than impossible. The land also falls towards the river along the northern and eastern edges, so a share of driveways climb or drop sharply and some garages sit under the house. Older homes and what they hold

Original bungalows here often have narrow hallways, tight doorway openings and internal doors that do not clear a modern sofa or fridge without coming off their hinges. Period floorboards, leadlight and plaster arches all warrant protection rather than speed. The rebuilds have the opposite profile — wide entries but a staircase with a tight landing turn, which is where wardrobes and bed bases usually stall. Either way we measure the awkward pieces against the route before the day rather than discovering it mid-carry.

Getting around

Kew East has no railway station. The suburb runs on cars, buses and the trams along High Street, with the Eastern Freeway close to the northern edge along the Yarra. For trucks the practical routes are High Street, Harp Road, Burke Road, Kilby Road and Belford Road. Burke Road and High Street are slow through both peaks and carry clearway restrictions on parts, so we set start times to work around them rather than through them.

Most stay close: Kew, Balwyn, Balwyn North, Ivanhoe or Hawthorn. There is also a steady pattern of downsizing out of the family homes into local townhouses and apartments, and of families moving in from further out for the schools and the proximity to the city.
