Spotswood sits in the City of Hobsons Bay, roughly seven kilometres south-west of the CBD, between Yarraville, Newport and Williamstown North, with the West Gate Freeway crossing above its northern edge. It grew as a working suburb around the rail and industrial land, and the housing reflects that: single-fronted Victorian and Edwardian weatherboard cottages on narrow blocks, later brick homes, and a steady wave of renovation and townhouse infill over the past two decades.

Cottages and what fits

Inside, the constraints are the hallway and the doorways. Single-fronted cottages have a narrow central hall, door openings well under modern widths, and rooms that leave little turning space for a three-seater or a fridge. Internal doors often need to come off their hinges, and original floorboards, plaster and leadlight need protecting rather than rushing. Renovated homes usually add a rear extension with a better back entrance, and where there is lane or side access that is frequently the smarter route — worth checking rather than assuming.

Industrial neighbours and main roads

Spotswood still has working industrial and commercial land alongside the housing, which means steady truck traffic on the through roads and, for business moves, sites with proper roller-door access and room to turn. Melbourne Road and Hall Street carry the local traffic, and the freeway ramps nearby are heavy in both peaks, so start times are set to load before the roads fill.

Getting around

Spotswood station sits on the Williamstown line, with buses connecting through to Yarraville and Newport. For trucks the practical routes are Melbourne Road, Hall Street and Douglas Parade, with the West Gate Freeway immediately at hand for anything heading to the city or across the river.
