It is one of Melbourne’s older established eastern suburbs, and the housing reflects that: Federation, Edwardian and interwar homes on generous blocks, wide streets with mature street trees, and a band of flats and newer townhouses closer to Union Road, Whitehorse Road and the station.
Period homes and what they hold
These are substantial houses and they hold substantial furniture. Solid timber wardrobes, sideboards, upright pianos, full bookcases, artwork and glass are common, and much of it was not designed to come apart. Internal staircases in Federation and Edwardian homes are frequently narrower than modern standard and often turn at a landing, and hallways can be long. Driveways and side access

Getting around
Surrey Hills is served by its station on the Lilydale and Belgrave lines, with trams on Whitehorse Road and Union Road the local shopping village. For trucks, Whitehorse Road, Canterbury Road and Elgar Road are the main routes, with the Eastern Freeway a short run north-west, which makes moves to the city, the north-east or interstate straightforward once loaded. Whitehorse Road is slow in both peaks, so we usually recommend an early start.
