Tarneit sits in the City of Wyndham, roughly 25 kilometres west of the CBD, between Truganina, Hoppers Crossing, Werribee and Wyndham Vale. It has changed faster than almost any suburb in Melbourne: what was farmland two decades ago is now a very large residential area of estate housing, schools and shopping centres, with new streets still being released on the outer edges.

Estate streets and truck positioning

The residential layout follows the current growth-corridor pattern — compact lots, small front setbacks, single-width driveways and, on many streets, little verge to work from. Cars park on both sides, which leaves one working lane and makes a large truck slow to position and slower to reverse. Where construction is still active nearby, kerb space competes with trade vehicles and deliveries. An early start consistently pays for itself here, and a smaller truck doing two runs is often faster than a large one doing one. Some estates have rear laneway garaging, which can be the better loading point when the lane is clear.

Double-storey homes and stairs

Most of the housing is double-storey on a small footprint, which means a straight but narrow staircase, a tight turn at the landing and the bedrooms upstairs. Wardrobes, bed bases and larger sofas are the pieces that stall, so we measure them against the stair route when we quote rather than on the day. Alfresco furniture, garage shelving and outdoor equipment are common here too and are easy to leave off an inventory.

Distance, traffic and timing

Tarneit is far enough out that the travel leg is a real part of the day, and the freeway approaches are heavy in the morning and again mid-afternoon. A move within the western corridor is straightforward; anything to or from the inner suburbs, the north or the east needs an early start to clear the freeway before the peak builds. Getting around

Tarneit station serves the suburb on the Geelong line, with an extensive bus network through the estates. For trucks the useful routes are the Princes Freeway, Leakes Road, Derrimut Road, Sayers Road and Tarneit Road.

Most stay in the west: Truganina, Hoppers Crossing, Werribee, Wyndham Vale, Point Cook or Williams Landing. There is also a strong flow of first-home buyers and families arriving from the inner and middle western suburbs, and from further afield, for the newer housing.
