Removalists in Upper Ferntree Gully
Upper Ferntree Gully sits in the City of Knox, roughly 33 kilometres east of the CBD, at the point where the suburbs run into the Dandenong Ranges and the national park. It is the last of the flat-ish east and the first of the hills: postwar and 1960s and 70s homes on treed blocks, streets that begin to climb, and properties backing onto bush reserve on the eastern side.
Slope, driveways and steps
This is the part that needs settling before a truck is sent. Many houses sit above or below street level, with driveways that climb or drop away, sometimes narrowing at the entry, and mature trees overhanging the track that make vehicle height a real limit. Where there is no usable driveway the front door is reached by a flight of garden steps, which slows every trip and means more crew rather than a bigger truck. We ask about the grade, the driveway and the number of steps when we quote, and where a loaded truck cannot get in and back out we plan a shuttle from the street with the carry included in the price.
Split levels and homes built into the hill
Houses built into the slope are commonly split-level or multi-level, with half-flights between living areas, a garage under the main floor and decking on the approach. Wardrobes, sofas and appliances often need to come apart or take an external route. We look at the approach and the internal route together, because on a sloping block they are the same problem.
Weather and surfaces
Sitting at the foot of the ranges, this area is wetter than the suburbs west of it and roads and drives hold damp and leaf litter well after rain. Steep unsealed driveways lose traction quickly in those conditions, so on wet days we keep heavy vehicles on sealed surfaces and plan the carry rather than risk a slide or a bogged truck.
Getting around
Upper Ferntree Gully station sits on the Belgrave line, and the Burwood Highway runs through the suburb, becoming the main route up into the hills. For trucks the useful routes are Burwood Highway, Dorset Road, Ferntree Gully Road and Mountain Highway, with EastLink a run west. The highway is heavy in both peaks and slower again on weekends with traffic heading into the ranges.
Where Upper Ferntree Gully moves go
Most stay in the Knox and hills corridor: Ferntree Gully, Boronia, Belgrave, Tecoma, Rowville or Bayswater. There is also a regular two-way pattern with the ranges above — households moving up for the setting, and others moving down when the slope and the steps become more than they want.
