Whitfield is a small township in the King Valley in north-east Victoria, roughly 250 kilometres from Melbourne and about an hour south of Wangaratta. It sits on the valley floor with farmland, vineyards and grazing country around it and the ranges rising either side, and the housing runs from township homes to farmhouses and cottages spread across the surrounding properties.
Distance and the valley road
The run is the defining factor here. A move to or from Melbourne is a long day on the road each way, and the last stretch up the valley is a two-lane road that is slower than the distance suggests. That affects the schedule, the crew and the price, so we plan these as full-day or staged jobs rather than fitting them into a suburban timetable, and we set out the travel component in the written quote. Booking well ahead matters, because long-distance dates are the hardest to move.
Farm and vineyard properties
Access on the surrounding properties needs preparation. Driveways run well back from the road, are often unsealed, sometimes pass through a gate or over a grid, and may have limited turning space at the house. There is no rail service in the valley; the district runs on road, with Wangaratta the nearest main centre and rail connection. For trucks the route that matters is the Wangaratta-Whitfield Road down the valley, connecting to the Hume Freeway at Wangaratta for the run to Melbourne or north to the border.
