Windsor sits in the City of Stonnington, roughly five kilometres south-east of the CBD, between Prahran, St Kilda East, Balaclava and South Yarra, with the southern end of Chapel Street running through it. It is one of the denser inner suburbs: Victorian and Edwardian terraces and cottages on narrow blocks, a large stock of interwar and postwar flats, newer apartment buildings along the main roads, and bluestone laneways behind many streets.

Parking decides the day

Very few properties here have off-street parking, and the streets are permit-restricted with cars parked nose to tail on both sides. Where the truck can stand determines how much of the day is spent carrying rather than loading. On the tighter streets a temporary parking arrangement through the council is worth organising in advance, since notice is generally required and it cannot be sorted out on the morning. Where no space can be held, we plan an early start and, if the street will not take a large vehicle, shuttle to the truck from a workable position nearby.

Stairwells, terraces and flats

Most of the older blocks have no lift. Stairwells are narrow with tight half-landings, entry doors are period width, and the flats themselves have small hallways and doorways that predate modern furniture. The two-storey terraces are the same problem in a different shape: a steep staircase with a tight turn at the top and limited headroom. Sofas, mattresses, wardrobes and fridges are the pieces that do not simply go up, and the answer is usually dismantling, a window route or extra crew rather than force. Original floorboards, cast-iron balustrades, tiled entries and leadlight all need protecting on the way through. Newer buildings generally have a lift and a loading bay, but the lift usually has to be booked and padded through building management.

Chapel Street, trams and laneways

Chapel Street, High Street and Dandenong Road all carry trams and clearway restrictions through peak periods, which limits where a truck can legally stop, so loading happens on the side streets wherever possible. Many properties back onto a bluestone laneway, and a rear gate can be a far better loading point than the street — worth checking rather than assuming, since lanes here are narrow and often partly blocked.

Getting around

Windsor station sits on the Sandringham line, with trams along Chapel Street, High Street and Dandenong Road and the CBD a short trip. For trucks the practical routes are Dandenong Road, Punt Road, High Street and Williams Road.

Where Windsor moves go

Most stay in the inner south-east: Prahran, South Yarra, St Kilda, St Kilda East, Balaclava or Armadale. There is also constant turnover in the rental stock, with part-loads and single-bedroom moves far more common here than full house moves.
