Houses built into the hill

Homes here are commonly split-level or multi-level, built into the slope with decks, external steps and a garage or shed well away from the front door. Steps and decking slow every trip and mean more crew rather than a bigger truck, and wardrobes, sofas and appliances often need to come apart or take an external route. We look at the approach and the internal route together, because on an acreage block they are the same problem.

What these properties hold

Sheds, workshops, tractors and ride-on mowers, garden and orchard equipment, water tanks, generators, trailers, firewood and stored materials are standard here, and on properties with horses there may be stables, feed and tack as well. These routinely add more volume than the house itself and are the part of an inventory most often left off entirely, so we ask about outbuildings and equipment specifically.

Getting around

Wonga Park has no railway station and limited bus service; the area runs on cars, with Croydon, Mooroolbark and Lilydale the nearest rail connections. For trucks the routes that matter are Jumping Creek Road, Dudley Road, Yarra Road and Homestead Road, connecting out to Maroondah Highway and EastLink. These are winding two-lane roads, so travel time is longer than the distance suggests.

Most stay in the area: Warrandyte, Croydon North, Chirnside Park, Park Orchards, Lilydale or Coldstream. There is also a regular pattern of downsizing off the acreage into local township housing once the driveway and the land become more than people want to maintain.
